“When stuck between a rock and a hard place, be like water, flexible.” This is a quote we found recently and our best advice for the upcoming holiday season. The holiday season can be the busiest and most stressful time of the year.
The holidays can bring many stressors but let’s focus on the three main ones: money, time and family. We want to get the perfect gifts but that can cost a lot of money. We want to do all the holiday activities but that takes up time. We also want to spend time with family but that can also be tough.
Gift shopping can be fun until you find yourself stressing from the costs. Don’t get too caught up on the trending gifts. Be flexible with your gift giving. Handmade gifts can be even more special. Bake cookies, write a heartfelt letter or get crafty. Or in lieu of a gift, opt for a shared experience instead. Plan a date for ice skating, walking in a park, Bingo or other fun activities that can become memories.
There are so many special events this time of the year. Instead of spreading yourself thin trying to make it to them all, focus on what is truly important to you. What would you actually miss if you didn’t attend? Are there other ways you can be present without actually attending? Sending a card or treat ahead of the event will let you recharge your social battery but also show them you appreciate the invite. This will also help you stay present during what really matters.
The holidays are usually when most people see their family but it can be a hard topic. Since the beginning of time, different generations have seen things… well differently. If you have some family that makes you feel uncomfortable, limit your time with them. Take breaks and be aware of your feelings. Set boundaries. Let them know there are topics you feel comfortable with discussing and others that you would rather keep for after the holidays. Whenever in doubt, take advice from Buddy the Elf “the best way to spread Christmas Cheer is singing loud for all to hear!” Ok that's not the best advice but if you start singing a song, hopefully get the point that you are in holiday mode.
But most importantly, if you feel yourself getting anxious, take time to ground yourself. Try this month’s tip that includes your taste buds!
